Educated at Harry Lucas School, Hockley he left aged 16 and began work at a manufacturing jewellery company learning the trade of a jeweller, starting off with setting, mounting, diamond milling and polishing. With too much short time working, he lost his job at twenty two and then began a career at Joseph Lucas Ltd, Great King Street, working in electronics. After two years employment as a Patrol Inspector Mike was promoted to Assistant Foreman and a further four years later promoted to become a General Foreman, managing a department of over two hundred and sixty operators, technicians and supervisors of varying levels. Being a multi-national company, he undertook numerous training courses at the primary training centre in Moseley, including Training for Management Responsibility in which he graduated, along with external College courses throughout Birmingham. The Lord Mayor remained working for Lucas’s which later became TRW (after being taken over by the US Company), retiring after thirty eight years, in Factory Supervision, which included working and opening several sites for the company in South Wales and in the West Midlands. He has been married to Pauline for over forty years and has four children, Suzanne, Teresa, John and Paul. They have four grandchildren three grandsons, Dylan, Cameron and Wilson with one granddaughter Annabelle. Apart from the family, the Lord Mayor’s interests are politics, Aston Villa FC, Birmingham history and making a contribution to the community, whether cleaning up a brook or helping someone in need. During their year both the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress are really looking forward to particularly engaging with Voluntary organisations of all descriptions. They also want to visit Businesses and support job creation especially those for young people. Birmingham City University
